Your gut affects SO MANY aspects of your health — from your skin, to your mood, your fertility, your emotions, your hormones, your stress levels and more. So even the smallest improvements to your gut health can have amazing flow-on effects to the rest of your body and mind… but the opposite is true too: if your gut’s in bad shape, everything’s going to be out of whack. So it’s super important to get your gut sorted, which is why on this week’s show — due to popular demand — I have brought back the amazingly insightful Donna Gates, gut expert extraordinaire! Today she will be answering all your burning questions to help you understand this oh-so-important organ — and get clear on how to take care of it — so you can experience massive shifts in your mood, energy levels and general vitality.
If you’ve never heard Donna speak before, you’re in for a treat. As the international best-selling author of The Body Ecology Diet: Recovering Your Health and Rebuilding Your Immunity, she is on a mission to change the way the world eats. The Body Ecology Diet was the first ‘diet’ of its kind — sugar-free, gluten-free, casein-free, and probiotic-rich. In fact, Donna’s ALWAYS been ahead of her time (she was teaching about fermented foods way back in 1994, and was the first to coin the phrase ‘inner ecosystem’). Over the past 25 years, she has truly become one of the most respected authorities in the field of digestive health, diet, and nutrition…. so I cannot wait for you to hear us delve crazy-deep into all things gutsy!

Loving this knowledge! With the 14hr fasting is that daily or once a week?
And is there a bit of a cheat sheet on what genes relate to different body functions?
Thanks
Hey honey, I do it daily but you have to tune into your body and do what works best for you. xx
Another amazing podcast thanks beautiful! Donna is just so incredibly knowledgeable ! I would love to know, is 23and me still (in your opinion) the best gene company you would recommend? Love + Light Mon xx
I think it’s one of the best honey and Donna loves it too. But do your research and find what resonates most with you. xx
This was so helpful! Amazing podcast I’ve just recently started the keto diet alongside intermittent fasting so this was super helpful! Loved hearing about all this and more definitely took a lot away from the podcast!
Thank you so very much for this incredible podcast – I listened to it whilst walking my small puppy and we had to keep going so that I could listen right to the very end (it’s okay she is now being treated to loads of water and cuddles). I am so excited to listen again (and possibly again), make notes and to take action. Thank you again ladies xo
Pleasure honey. So glad you got a lot out of it. xx
Loved this podcast! Donna is just so full of knowledge and it’s great that you had her back on the show! I had one question – I know you have previously said that your husband Nick has had Lyme disease and chronic fatigue. Did he see a health practitioner at all for his Lyme, one that he can recommend in Sydney? Thanks!
Hey angel, Check out Kylie Seaton. She is great. xx
another great podcast Melissa. Definitely excellent listening hearing about the benefits of intermitant fasting and keto diet pros and cons. thankyou once again for sharing.
Pleasure angel. I love sharing with you. xx
I loved this so much, thank you! I’m so curious to learn more about histamines and oxylates. I’m going to look at these, thank you!
When Donna was talking about people getting too many oxylates (the smoothie example she was using with almond milk etc (43.00)) – She was saying we should be mindful of how many oxylates we have, do you know why this is? xx
Hey Penny, Here are two articles Donna sent me for you. Article one and article two. Have a read and let me know what you think. xx
This is our most recent one.

Gosh, you are so kind to follow that up for me and go to that trouble. So interesting, thank you so much. I feel like you need to get Donna back on AGAIN some time!! She’s amazing. Thank you again. XX
Hey Melissa,
I don’t think Donna mentioned a healthy weight gain protocol. She mentioned Intermittent fasting should be avoided when trying to gain. So does that to consume small meals or probiotics every few hours or something along these lines?
Hi Molly, this is a very bio-individual question and depends on many factors around body type, digestion etc… Always best to see guidance from a practitioner like Donna or someone well versed in body types and functional medicine like Stephen Cabral.
Hey Melissa. I’m new to podcasts in general and I’m now obsessed with yours! Thank you! This conversation is so interesting – I wish I knew about it 10 years ago! My question is, are there any clinics in Sydney that offer the DNA testing or is it done online? I’d love to speak to someone personally as I have issues with bloating. xx
Hey Kayla, Dr Stephen Cabral does DNA testing and you can have a session with him over skype once he get’s your results back. He is the best! Tell him I sent you. xx
Hey there
I LOVE this podcast- clears up so much confusion and can’t waitbto read this article.
My question is when getting the gene test where do I go and what do I ask for? I have asked naturopaths around if they specialise in gut health or perform gene tests and none of them know what I’m talking? Unsure if maybe I’m going to the wrong areas?
Thanks
Amy Paulinich
Hey Amy, 23 And Me or Smart DNA are both great place’s to do the testing. Check them out. xx
Another outstanding podcast! this is my second time visiting and listening to your works and I love it! For the second time, my confusions became clear and I’ve got to know some facts that I’m not expecting to learn here. Keep it up Melissa! 🙂
Glad you loved the episode honey. Donna is great. xx
