I’ve been using essential oils since I was a little girl. Then, about 6 years ago, I was introduced to dōTERRA essential oils… and I fell head over heels in love. We use these powerful and potent gifts from the earth multiple times, in multiple ways, every single day in our home. That’s why my hubby and I joined forces to launch our doTERRA team – a movement that spreads health and wellness across the globe. Empowering every home to live a more natural and toxic-free lifestyle.
While these plant extracts have many amazing applications (and a ton of scientifically proven benefits) I think my all-time favorite aspect of the oils is how they force you to connect with yourself. It might sound ‘woo-woo’ but as soon as you’ve tried them, you’ll get it: they send you on a self-love journey and make you connect with your deepest truth. In fact, I truly believe that you can’t use these essentials oils and NOT have a deep love, reverence, and connection with your divine self… THIS is the reason why I love them the most! And when I see people start their essential oils journey… sister, I get so excited, because not only is their health and wellness about to skyrocket, but they are about to fall even more in love with themselves… It’s a win-win on all levels.
Here are 15 other reasons why I love, use, and adore these essential oils…
I am in control of my cleaning products
Nasty toxins? Forgeddaboutit! With these plant essences in my toolkit, I now create my own toxic-free cleaning products and I know EXACTLY what I’m using. For example, the other day I made a mirror and glass cleaner with 2 cups of filtered water, 2 tablespoons of white vinegar and 10 drops of Lemon essential oil. It worked a treat and smelled divine. I also have another easy-to-make cleaning product which is simply filtered water plus some drops of the OnGuard essential oil blend (which has powerful immune-boosting properties), popped into a spray bottle. It literally cleans everything. So not only is it so much cheaper — because I now only have two (not 10) cleaning products — it also saves me a truckload. Not to mention a whole cupboard in my laundry for other goodies.
Seriously, I dare you to look at the ingredients of your store-bought cleaner (and all your other cleaning products for that matter) and ask yourself if you really want to be breathing that in and using that in your home. We can’t control the pollution in our environment outside our home, but we CAN control what happens in our home environment. I have turned my entire home into a wellness sanctuary and am so proud that we now use all-natural, toxic-free, homemade cleaning products. It’s epic.
My linen is super clean and smells super amazing
When doing my washing I add oils such as Lavender or Clary Sage to my sheets and towels, so they come out smelling delicious. I also add Tea Tree to Leo’s sweaty cricket gear so it comes out smelling yummy. (All the mama’s will know what a feat that is!)
I create my own beauty products
I get to create all my own beauty products such as perfume, skincare, hair care, toothpaste, mouthwash, after-sun spray, wrinkle oil (oh hey there, Frankincense), and other beauty products that are actually toxic-free and not full of nasty chemicals.
It’s important to note that yes, while it’s super fun to mix up your own beauty products (#KitchenWitch), the importance goes way beyond that.
Our skin is our largest organ and whatever you put on it topically gets absorbed straight into your bloodstream. So, next time you spray that expensive perfume on your neck (right into your thyroid gland) or that deodorant straight into your lymphatic system, take a look at the ingredient list first… You may think twice about your next spray.
(And sister, until you — and your man — have smelled the Whisper blend, you don’t know how sensual… and flat-out sexy… essential oils can be…!!)
I can enhance my mood and emotions
For example, if I need a ‘pick me up’ at 3pm, instead of reaching for chocolate and coffee, I reach for my pick me up oils like Wild Orange, Peppermint, Lemon, and Lime. And when I want to de-stress and calm down my nervous system I reach for the grounding and calming oils such as Lavender, Lavender Peace, Clary Sage, Vetiver, and Sandalwood. (I’ve heard from many women that these oils are the only things that have helped them break the “5 pm wine-time habit”.)
I supercharge my meditations with Frankincense
This incredible botanical is the oil of truth and the most spiritual of all the oils. Baby Jesus was brought Frankincense, Myrrh and Gold… so if it’s good enough for baby J, it’s good enough for me.
I eat and cook with them every day
Did you say chickpea curry with Ginger, Lemongrass, Black pepper and Cardamom? Followed by a Wild Orange vegan brownie. Umm, yes please!
Hey, thanks a lot for sharing! What type of diffuser do you use at home?
Hey Simona, I use the doTERRA diffuser and love it. I actually have 3 in my home. xx
Hi Melissa! I’ve just recently starting becoming oil obsessed! I know you love to ‘dress’ yourself in coconut oil and an essential oil. What are your faves? So far I’ve just tried lavender but I would love some other ideas.
Hey honey, I LOVE Franky, Lavender Peace, Rose, Jasmine, Whisper… mmmm they are all delish. xx What’s your fav combo?
They all sound divine! Lavender has been a favourite at nighttime. I might try putting some franki in the mix!
Franky is one of my FAVS, I use it almost daily. He is very powerful and very spiritual. xx
I absolutely love this list! I have the do terra LRP and home essentials pack and always looking for interesting new ways to incorporate them into my life, and this is fantastic!

Hi Mel! Love the post ! How many drops you put of each essential oil in your bath ? Thanks! Love you!
Hey honey, everyone is different and can handle different amounts so I would start with 3 and go from there. xx
Love this post Melissa! Just wondering how you use your oils in your drinking water and bath water. Do you put something else in there to help disperse the oils so they don’t just sit on the top of the water? xx
Hi honey, you can add a drop of liquid stevia to your drinks and mix a few drops with coconut oil for your bath but not too much only a tiny amount. Enjoy angel. xx
Thanks for the fabulous article. Particularly interested in the blend to help with the 5.pm wine craving. How is it used -defused or wrong?
Hey honey, you can defuse these oils in your defuser. Enjoy! xx
Hon Mellisa, wow! It’s so nice to see this post since I have been doing my own face cream, night face oil (yes, indeed hello Franky) and cleaning products for a while, but I would love to know more uses of the oils to make the most of them. Anywhere nice I can find more recipes? I can recommend the book Do it gorgeously, where I got mine. Thanks lovely!
Check out The Wellness Mama honey, she is awesome! xx
Hey Melissa,
Do you dilute any of these oils when applied topically?
Thanks.
Eb
Yes honey I use doTERRA’s fractioned coconut oil. xx
What a great post Melissa, thanks for sharing :) Essential oils are amazing!
They sure are. As I write this I just put lavender on mine and Leo’s mozzie bites. They are so versatile. xx
Hi Melissa,
Would love an “Essential Oils 101” type podcast, I don’t know where to start! Thanks :)
I’ve already done two for you, honey. I interviewed two doctors who are essential oils advocates… Dr Eric Z and Dr Josh Axe. Have a listen and let me know if you have any more questions. xx
Melissa, I would like to know more about essential oil blends that is good for my asthma. I have an attack right now and really at 51, this scarcity of breathing space is not welcome. Thanks.
Hey Shirley, my little boy has asthma also and he loves diffusing Easy Air at night and putting that on his chest. He says it helps a lot. Have you got Easy Air? Also, you can find out so much more about essential oils by joining our Path To Freedom team. Where we are dedicated to teaching your more about these oils and how to live an essential oil life. Let me know how you go honey. xx
Hi Melissa

Hey Daniella, Check out this article by Dr Eric Z. I have also done a podcast episode with him here which you can check out too. xx
Hey Melissa! I have listened to a podcast with you the other day and just LOVED it!! Then I noticed that you are an essential oil junkie too!
