12 years.
That’s how long I”ve been in the online business game.
In internet years, that’s an eternity — it practically qualifies me for a gold watch and senior discounts, right?
But jokes aside, over this past 12 years, our company has racked up more than $10,000,000 in online sales.
But here’s the thing: although that number has its charm, the real gold lies in the wisdom we’ve gathered along the way.
So here are eight golden lessons for you — all learned from real experience on the path from zero to eight figures.
👇
Lesson #1. Motion Doesn’t Always Mean Progress
It’s a trap many entrepreneurs fall into: spending hours, days, even months working on tasks that give the illusion of productivity, but that don’t actually move the needle.
I’m certainly not immune to this. Early on in my business journey, I spent months fiddling with my website — obsessing over the colours, the fonts, the copy…
One of the earliest versions of my website.
But here’s the revelation: After reaching a certain threshold, those tweaks were inconsequential. It wasn’t progress; it was just busywork. Like being on a treadmill – moving, sweating, but not really getting anywhere.
If you want to put yourself on the path to hit 6, 7 or even 8 figures, then it’s pivotal you learn how to discern between mere motion and real action. The more you can channel your energy towards tasks that bring tangible results, the more progress you’ll create.
Lesson #2. Launch With Minimum Viable Products.
No product is perfect at launch time. And indeed, it shouldn’t be — if you’re perfecting things, you’re wasting valuable time where you could be on the market, bringing in income, and gathering priceless feedback from your customers.
At the same time, you never want to launch something that’s half-baked. (A minimum viable product is not an excuse for shoddy workmanship.)
But great entrepreneurs know that delivering something that’s “good enough” and then iterating swiftly and repeatedly serves everyone (including their customers) FAR better than if they were to spend years working on a masterpiece that never sees the light of day.
Lesson #3. Create Multiple Income Streams.
When I started my business, I was only selling one thing: my health coach services.
Pretty quickly, I realised that only having one income stream left me vulnerable. If I got sick, or went on a holiday, then I wouldn’t have any income coming in.
Setting up multiple income streams solved this problem.
I started modestly, by creating small scale products that complemented the service I was offering: online courses, guided meditations, ebooks, etc.
These days, Nick and I now have multiple income streams under our business umbrella, including product sales, affiliate sales, speaking fees, book royalties, music royalties, and more.
This diversity means we can weather setbacks that would be a death knell for other businesses, like an economic downturn (hello, 2023!) or being unable to run facebook ads for six months due to having our facebook account hacked (hi, Meta! 🫠).
Lesson #4. Make Your Free Opt-In Better Than Other People’s Paid Stuff.
Your opt-in is a crucial piece of making money online. But in today’s saturated market, it’s not enough to merely offer something for free. To get traction, it also needs to create immense value.
Here’s how to do it:
The S.P.I.C.E. Formula for Irresistible Freebies:
- Survey. Study the top-performers in your niche. What are they doing? How are they presenting their content? This isn’t about copying but rather understanding the benchmark.
- Problem solve. Position your freebie to solve a problem that your ideal customers have (whether they’re aware of it or not).
- Invest in design: First impressions count. Whether it’s a well-designed eBook, checklist, quiz, or something else, investing in design can elevate the perceived value of your content.
- Creative: Add a unique spin or perspective. Whether it’s a personal anecdote, a new methodology, or a unique visual representation, originality makes your content stand out.
- Evaluate and evolve: Before you release it to the masses, get feedback. Maybe it’s from a small segment of your audience, peers, or mentors. Use their insights to refine and improve.
Lesson #5. Gather Customer Data.
What you *think* your customers need and want, and what they *actually* want, can be two different things. So take every opportunity you can to gather data on them — their hopes, dreams, problems, everything.
There are heaps of ways to do this: ask questions in your newsletter. Poll them on social media. Create a quiz.
Whatever path you choose, the data will tell you far more than assumptions ever will.
Lesson #6. Stop Wearing All The Hats ASAP.
When I first started my online business, I was a one-woman show. I was the CEO, the web guru, the wordsmith, and yes, even the in-house tea getter!
Wearing all the hats is fine — maybe even necessary — when you’re starting out, but if you’re doing everything yourself, there’s a cap on how much you can grow.
When I finally hired help, it freed up my schedule, steered me back to what I do best, and injected rocket fuel into our sales.
These days, my team is the lifeblood of my business. They help me execute all my big ideas, bring things to market swiftly, and still have loads of quality time with my daughter, which is super important to me.
Lesson #7. Don’t Be The Smartest Person In The Room.
Hiring people who are excellent at what they do means you’re getting the benefit of decades of experience, training, intellectual capital, talent and more. It’s also one of the most reliable (and quickest!) paths to grow your business to the next level.
Lesson #8. Entrepreneurship Isn’t a Solo Sport.
Yes, our sales figures might be impressive.
But the true wealth? It’s not in the numbers. It’s in the lifelong friendships I’ve made.
When I entered this world over a decade ago, I could never have envisioned the deep, soulful connections I’d end up making. But honestly, it’s the besties I’ve met along the way who’ve made every high and low worth it.
Still searching for your biz besties? Here’s a nudge: Dive into niche Facebook groups, engage passionately in comment sections, or immerse yourself in a mastermind or specialized community.
It might take you out of your comfort zone, but BOY is it worth it — in business as in life, it’s the shared experiences that truly elevate the journey.
