If you’re ever in the presence of someone who’s in an epic relationship, listen closely when they talk about love, because they’ve likely got some hardcore wisdom up their sleeve… And if you ever have the opportunity to hear from BOTH partners in a conscious coupling, stop what you’re doing immediately and grab a pencil, baby — because you can be sure that the truth-bombs will be raining hard and fast!
Rich Roll and Julie Piatt will tell you straight up, they don’t have a “perfect” relationship. (Who does?!) But after spending time with them, I can tell you — this conscious couple is inspiring as heck, and there is so much we can learn from them about how to navigate through life as a duo. I was determined to get to the bottom of what makes these guys tick, so boy did I ask them some juicy questions in today’s podcast episode.
You’ve probably heard of Rich before. His story is an epic one: after finding himself sedentary and overweight in middle age, he overhauled his life at age 40, adopted a plant-powered whole foods diet and reinvented himself as an ultra-distance endurance athlete. His inspirational memoir FINDING ULTRA: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World’s Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself was an Amazon #1 best-seller and has inspired thousands across the world to embrace a plant-powered diet. Rich is a frequent guest on CNN, was named one of the “25 Fittest Men in the World” by Men’s Fitness and is the host of his own chart-topping podcast. As if that’s not enough, he’s also a graduate of Stanford University and Cornell Law School, and an inspiration to people worldwide as a transformative example of healthy living.
If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of discovering Rich’s partner Julie and her work, you’re in for a treat. Julie has spent decades traveling many paths and studying many traditions. She is a true renaissance artist who expresses her creative voice as a plant-based chef, singer-songwriter, yogi, sculptor, painter, spiritual guide, and homeschooling parent to four children.
Together, these two are a powerhouse of conscious living, soulful connection, and straight-up full-blown love. Being in their presence (even though it was long distance!) it was obvious how aligned they are, and how special their energy is… and I couldn’t wait to ask them the hard questions to uncover their secrets!
If you’re keen to deepen your connection with your partner, lean into love, and learn some crazy-effective skills for navigating through life as a couple, this conversation is for you.

That was so unbelievably real, perfect (by knowing that imperfections are ok!) and inspiring, I am definitely going to listen to this over again. I think the authenticity from all sides shone so brightly, it was magical to witness how the conversation flowed. I love all you do Melissa. Listening to Nick’s podcasts are also a must for me. This episode just felt like it expanded and complimented all I have learned from you guys. It couldn’t have been better – thank you a million times over! xx
Pleasure Jane. I am so so so happy you loved it so much. What were your biggest takeaways?
Oh gosh, where do I start?!!
I think the sharing of experiences from people who are as open and genuine as you guys, makes the conversation resonate even more, but specifically these takeaways spring to mind!
I love how Julie and Rich are not operating from the same platform or vibration frequency, yet they still cultivate something special. I suppose looking from the outside at you and Nick, you are completely ‘one’ which is so beautiful, but me and my hubby (of 22 years….yikes!) are quite different in our approach so hearing of an example of a couple who are similar is cool.
Tips such as mutual respect, not expecting our partner to be different from who they are & their truth, being mindful on all levels and having boundaries are all really relevant to me.
The ‘letting go’ and conflict resolution was also a biggie and something I am working on. I really hang on to things and can spend all night (or longer) worrying about something that was said/done, when my hubby has let it wash over him ages ago. I liked how Julie said we are reborn with each breath.
Also, reinforcing how everything is as it is supposed to be for right now, is something which is easy to forget amidst life’s challenges, but form an integral part of our growth.
Julie mentioned about entering into a different phase, where inspiration and love flow back from her sons, We have a 19 year old daughter at uni, and she could not be a truer example.
I have recently undertaken a weekend TM retreat with my Dad and his fiancee (I only discovered TM through you a couple of years ago) where people who have been meditating some time spoke about coincidences happening more and more. I get so excited whenever I hear of other people doing their 20 mins morning and evening, because I know of the massive benefits this has brought to me and my family. My hubby/daughter don’t meditate, but I’m less confused now that it is ok… just like me not being able to run like they do is also ok. As Julie says, we are all human!
Thank you Melissa, you have a way of putting things across in such an authentic way. It makes what you do very special!
Thank you so much for sharing and your kind words angel. I am so proud of you! Keep going and keep up the meditation. Hopefully one day we can meditate together. xx
This podcast has been absolutely enlightening to listen to! I have written down Julie’s message at the end, such empowering & beautiful words of truth & a message my soul needed to hear. I LOVE this
Melissa I would love you to interview Australian artist Tash Sultana! Or vegan activist James Aspey.
Sending you love ✨
Emily
