We all know that living a toxic free life is essential for epic health… but did you know it’s crucial for healthy, luscious hair too?
I get asked a lot about my hair, so I thought I would share all my best, toxic free tips for luscious long and healthy locks.
Here’s what I do:
- I get it cut every 8 weeks with Renee Saville (she’s awesome!). This helps it stay healthy and strong and actually makes it grow faster.
- I don’t colour my hair. I stopped in 2010 after I hit rock bottom and love having my natural colour and some highlights from the sun.
- I wash my hair once a week then let it dry naturally.
- I don’t blow dry or put any heating tools on it unless I’m going to an event. Most of the time, it’s left natural.
- The outside is a reflection of the inside — your hair, skin and nails are a reflection of what’s going on inside your body. So make sure you eat a healthy, wholefood diet, drink clean filtered water, sleep 8 hours a night, meditate, remove stress and toxicity from all areas of your life, laugh, play and have as much fun as you possibly can every single day. This will show on the outside. (And you won’t just have gorgeous hair, you’ll have glowing skin too.)

Treat your inside with love and respect and your outside will reflect that.

- I use organic, toxin free, natural shampoo, and conditioner. Right now I’m using Everescents and really liking it. Type ‘Melissa’ at the checkout to get 10% off.
- People say my hair grows really fast. I love rubbing rosemary essential oil into my roots and scalp when it’s wet to stimulate hair growth. (Try it yourself. Head here and get 25% off, plus get access to loads of toxic free recipes and cool health and beauty hacks too)
- After years of not wearing a hat, I now wear a hat when I’m in the sun so my hair doesn’t dry out.
- I use scrunchies instead of elastic bands as they break my hair.
- I swim in the ocean every day, but I don’t always put my head under. I did for years and my hair was always so dry, like straw, so I stopped. It’s made a massive difference, as the salt really dried out my hair. If I do put my head under, I rinse my hair in freshwater as soon as I can.
- I shower and wash my hair in filtered water. Chlorine and fluoride are not only extremely toxic for your health and hair, but it will also dry out your hair.
- If my hair is really dry I will do a deep treatment adding 3 tablespoons of organic coconut oil, 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 2 drops each of Rosemary, Lavender, Peppermint, Clary Sage, and Geranium essential oil to my hair, I rub it in, tie it up into a bun, and leave for a few hours, then wash your hair as normal.
