Creating epic, thriving health does NOT need to be hard, and it certainly doesn’t need to cost a bomb…
Here’s a list of 78 health hacks that are all easy, affordable (most of them are FREE!), and crazy effective.
If you want to take your health and happiness seriously next level, add these ideas into your daily routine and *feel* the immediate difference in your mind and body…
- Drink 1 liter of warm filtered water and lemon juice (or lemon essential oil) first thing in the morning (after you have brushed your teeth and scraped your tongue). This will kickstart your digestion and boost your immunity.
- Try tongue scraping. (Try this one — it’s plastic-free!)
- Deep breathing — Take a deep breath whenever you feel tense, anxious or down. Breathing into your belly balances your nervous system and reverses the stress response of your body almost immediately.
- Say out loud or write down what you are grateful for.
- Give yourself a full body massage. (I love using organic coconut oil and a few drops of frankincense and lavender essential oils.)
- Meditate. Honestly, just do it. Nothing will change your state faster.
- Create a vision board.
- Have a soulie chat with one of your besties.
- Learn to say ‘no thank you’ to things that do not light you up.
- Spend as much time as possible outside in nature.
- Feel the sun kiss your skin.
- Create a ‘happy playlist’ to put on whenever you need a boost.
- Swim in the ocean or a river or lake.
- Move your body outside — take your yoga mat to the park, dance, do some star jumps and squats, just *move* your body…
- Drink loads of room temperature clean filtered water during the day.
- Eat slowly and mindfully and give thanks to your food before you eat it.
- Laugh a lot.
- Dance every day, everyone has time for at least one song. Here’s my current fave song to dance to.
- Spend quality time with loved ones as much as possible.
- … But then also spend time alone too!
- Play games. Board games, card games, chase-y games, tickle games… any games!
- Eat way more whole foods (like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, and whole grains).
- Make love as much as you can.
- Go to bed early, get 8 hours of deep and restful sleep, and rise with the sun.
- Give yourself a bedtime. It helps your body to get a better sleep-wake rhythm, especially if you have trouble sleeping.
- Read. You could read this or this.
- Have an Epsom salt and essential oil bath.
- Let go of people, obligations, and beliefs that weigh you down.
- Perform a mindful body scan to release tension from your body and calm your racing mind.
- Watch the sunrise and set.
- Dim your lights at night. Wear blue-blocking glasses if you can.
- Dry brush your skin.
- Cook yourself a delicious healthy meal.
- Brew yourself an organic herbal tea and sip it slowly and mindfully outside.
- Smile as much as you can. While you’re driving, doing the dishes, taking out the trash… smile and smile hard!
- Sing or hum — my fave places are in the car and the shower.
- Sit up straight. Research shows that how you carry yourself impacts your energy levels, mood and ability to focus.
- Cuddle, kiss, touch. Even in the digital age, we all crave physical contact. Research shows that a simple hug can boost your immunity and overall wellbeing.
- Go on a regular ‘digital detox’, where you do not touch your phone or computer all day (start with one day per week and build up from there).
- Follow inspiring and uplifting people on social media. Unfollow people who bring you down.
- Be mindful of the TV, news, and media you consume and make sure it’s nourishing and serving you. (Romcoms are my go-to genre to nurture my heart!)
- Stop, smell and touch the flowers.
- Detox your home from top to bottom.
- Volunteer your time.
- Help someone.
- Floss your teeth. Practicing good oral hygiene doesn’t just protect you from tooth decay and gum disease, it also helps clear away harmful bacteria linked to heart disease.
- Tune in and listen to your body — it always knows.
- Eat the rainbow.
- Take care of your temple… you only get one.
- Set goals
- Meditate. I know I’ve said this one before, but seriously: it’s THAT important!
- Finish your morning shower with one minute of cold water for a short hydrotherapy session.
- Swap your morning coffee for celery juice.
- Use essential oils and diffuse them all day long. (My current go-to combo is peppermint, tangerine, and Lavender Peace… yum!)
- Turn off all notifications on your phone. (Do this one right now… I’ll wait!)
- Keep your phone on silent and on airplane mode as much as possible.
- Keep your phone out of your sight as much as possible. Even just SEEING your phone can cause stress in your body.
- Use affirmations and mantras.
- Set a reminder on your phone to get up and move.
- Get fresh air in your home and office every day. Open the windows and doors and let that fresh air flow!
- Do something NEW — listen to a new artist, read a different kind of book, go to a new organic cafe, brush your teeth with the opposite hand… your brain thrives on novelty, so feed it something new.
- Let in the sunlight. Open your curtains and blinds and let in as much of that natural cleansing light as possible.
- Start gardening and grow your own herbs and food if you can. (A single pot on your windowsill is a great start.)
- Read the labels on EVERYTHING.
- Do not use plastic.
- Do more things you enjoy, or make the things you do more enjoyable, by purposely sprinkling simple pleasures throughout your day.
- Get your creative juices flowing. Paint, dance, sing, draw, sew, be creative with your food, do something — anything — each day that makes you feel creative.
- Do some yin yoga or gentle stretches before bed.
- Get in your 10,000 steps every day.
- Try Qigong or Tai Chi.
- Use your own bodyweight to do resistance training: do squats, lunges, push-ups and jumping jacks to start building muscle strength. No fancy equipment needed.
- Train your mental muscles by challenging yourself every day: learn a new word (bonus points if it’s in a foreign language!), do crossword puzzles, watch TED Talks or thought-provoking documentaries, read a chapter in a book, or come up with 10 interesting ideas to exercise your creative muscles.
- Green surroundings are known to ease mental fatigue. So pick flowers from your garden or get a plant on your desk, choose a natural scene as your screensaver, and head into nature for leisurely walks and bike rides.
- Make time for daydreaming, reflection, and stillness. Your mind needs a break from constantly processing information to wander freely and make creative connections. (That’s why you get your best ideas in the shower or during a leisurely walk!)
- Embrace the Okinawan habit of eating until you’re 80% full.
- Practice TRE (Tension and Trauma Release Exercises).
- Ask for help and support.
- Be loving and kind. This will do wonders for your health and happiness levels.
