If you follow me on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, you’ll know that right now, I am on my Mastering Your Mean Girl national book tour around Australia. It’s been a blast so far! The Perth, Adelaide and Hobart goddesses were a dream to meet and share with, and we have now mastered over 250 Mean Girls — a truly awesome achievement! Melbourne is up next, and I’m super-excited to meet a whole ‘nother group of amazing, empowered soul-sisters.

While taking my book on tour is a dream come true, for someone like me — who takes such immense pleasure and pride in honouring my temple through the best possible food, water and thoughts I can — figuring out what to eat when I’m on the road can be… well, a little interesting from time to time.

In the interests of transparency, there were definitely times in the past where I was so rigid about what passed my lips that I would have avoided travel altogether out of fear of not being able to control what I ate. But these days, after loads of self-love work and a commitment to choosing love over fear in every moment, I’m far better able to roll with the punches and figure things out on the fly (pardon the pun). Because ain’t no Mean Girl fears gonna stop me from living my dream!

As well as the self-love component (which has made a major difference), now that I’ve been travelling to speaking engagements for years — which means I have to be absolutely on my game for the duration of my trip — I’ve come up with some pretty creative ways to stay super healthy while travelling and ensure that I always feel my best, no matter where I am.

If you’re interested in my 14 Hot Tips For Feeling Fresh When Flying article, you can read that here. But for today, I am going to share the best strategies I’ve found to travel like a goddess and honour your temple whilst on the road.

So here goes…

1. Do Your Research

Before I get to any destination, I have done a serious Google search and made a list of all the best organic cafes, restaurants, markets and health food stores close to where I am staying. I then save these in Evernote so I always have options I can look up. There are also loads of great blogs that have super-useful guides to the best organic cafes and eateries in almost every city. Just have a Google and do your research.

2. Stay In An Airbnb Or With Friends

My whole tour, I have stayed with friends or family (except in Hobart, because I don’t have any family or friends there — yet!). When you stay in a proper house or apartment (as opposed to a hotel) you have access to a kitchen, which means you don’t have to eat out for breakfast, lunch and dinner (which can be expensive and isn’t the healthiest option). The other good thing about staying in a house with family or friends is that most people have water filters these days, so you can fill up your stainless steel or epic glass water bottle, before you head out on your day’s adventures. Again, this means you’re saving money on buying water when you’re out, and also (even more importantly) saving the environment by not purchasing plastic water bottles. Always carry your bottle with you everywhere you go and top it up with filtered water when you can.

3. Plan And Be Prepared

This is crucial so you are never caught out. Plan ahead when you are out and about. Take something with you — stashed in your handbag — in case you can’t find anything. Don’t be lazy: it pays off when you really make the effort. Some of my go-to options include activated nuts, dried fruit, veggies sticks, fruits or seaweeds.

4. Take An Eye Mask And Earplugs

Most of the time I travel it’s for a speaking gig, so when I arrive at my destination, I need to be ‘on’. That’s why I always sleep with earplugs and an eye mask — to really make sure I get a good, deep, replenishing night’s sleep. Sleep is imperative for our health and happiness, so do yourself a favour and make sure you are getting the best quality shut-eye you can.

5. Ask Locals Or Your Tribe For Their Fave Spots

As well as doing my own research, I will also email all my health and wellness peeps in the city I am travelling to and ask their recommendations for the best places to eat, do yoga, hike, swim etc. You can also ask your tribe on social media. (I’ve discovered so many great places this way!)

6. Become An Art Director

When I am at home, I don’t often eat out. Partly because my husband is the most epic cook on the planet, but also because when I eat at home, I know exactly what is going in my food. When you’re travelling, of course, there are times when eating out is the only option, and in those moments I choose to surrender.

To start with, I’m proactive where I can be. For example, I always call the cafe or restaurant before I get there to make sure they are happy to cater to my dietary requirements (vegan, no sugar, no gluten or seeds oils). Some places aren’t (which is totally fine), in which case I will lovingly go somewhere else. That said, most places these days are super lovely, and if you ask nicely — with a smile on your face and love in your heart — they will happily help you out. (Seriously, you’ll be amazed at how far kindness can take you.)

To travel like a goddess you need to do your research, be prepared, then… surrender.

Once I am there, I have a quick chat to the waiter about my requirements, and together we “art direct” the menu to come up with something that will work for me. Like I mentioned before, most places are super lovely and happy to do this, but some are not so just check before you go. And remember to BE KIND!

From that point on, it’s surrender all the way. I bless my food before it enters my mouth and give thanks to the produce and the people who prepared it. If the food arrives and things aren’t entirely to my liking, I’ll either quietly leave it on the side of my plate, order an extra side (steamed greens are a great option), or simply suggest to my dining companion that we swing by a health food store on the way home so I can pick up something else. Gone are the days where I’d get upset that waiters/chefs didn’t understand my needs; these days it’s peaceful surrender the whole way.

7. Fast

If there truly is nothing healthy available, do NOT succumb to junk or fast food. Fast instead. You will be surprised at how long you can actually go without food. I would much rather wait a few hours then eat processed junk which will only make you feel worse. Airplanes are a prime example of this — I’d much rather fast than fill my temple with the toxic ‘food’. (See the next point if you’re prone to getting hangry!)

8. Travel With Snacks

I ALWAYS travel with something that way I am never caught out. And if I don’t have anything and I am starving I drink loads of filtered water until I can get my hands on something nourishing.

So there you have it — my top 8 travel tips to travel like a goddess.

Now I want to hear from you, beautiful. What is your number one tip to travel like a goddess? Please share with us in the comments below and together let’s create an epic list of resources so we can all travel like goddesses.

    Hi Melissa,
I am so happy to read your post this morning. There couldn’t have been a better timing! I live in Brisbane and I’m flying to Sydney on Sunday for the first time in my life. I am definitely going to use all your great recommendations and as the 5th point suggests, I would like to ask you for some tips on healthy cafes, restaurants, shops and things to do and see in Sydney. The weather is looking great so any outside activities would be amazing.
I would really appreciate your help 🙂
    Thank you!
    xxx,
    Anni

I LOOOOVE all of this tips, Melissa!!! So much gratitude to your clear wisdom and loving heart x x x

My little tips to add are…:

Make sure you get a QUALITY eye mask and mouldable ear plugs – There is nothing worse than having an eye-mask that doesn’t ‘mask’, or ear plugs that are uncomfortable/fall out. I have experienced this too many times and its such a small investment for something so valuable. You can find quality eye masks and ear plugs on Trademe and Amazon, here are some great ones:

Also having a sprayable toner to mist when you’re on and off the plane, I love rose water infused water, or a few drops of aptly named essential oil ‘Melissa’ which is so revitalising, like orange blossom! A few drops of pure lavender oil for sleeping, or pop on your wrist/behind ears for when you want to have a blissful deep sleep.

I also find being comfortable on the plane is SO important, so having things like big comfy socks, cardigan and scarf (as planes tend to be chilly with their air cond), and a neck pillow if you plan on sleeping on the plane.

For long flights, I always take a notebook to write any ideas and inspiration in, as well as a couple of books to read, and new audio-books too – 432HZ meditation is essential, and the I AM meditation by Wayne Dyer.

Another great website is CouchSurfing – http://www.couchsurfing.com – Which is great if you don’t mind staying on someone’s couch, and is totally FREE so perfect if you’re on a budget – Sometimes they have a spare bed if you’re lucky, and they ALWAYS share their city tips with you, its incredible ~ Immersing yourself straight into the culture!

    Infinite love!

Thanks for these fabulous tips Melissa! I am blessed enough to have travelled all over the world at such a young age and when I started learning to be ‘healthy’ I became very rigid and this took away from the enjoyment in my travel and the precious moments with family and friends. Now I know how to be flexible while nurturing myself at the same time! Can’t express enough how living my life in love over fear has made everything I do so much more magical. My top tip would definitely be to do research and ask locals! Helps you really enjoy the place you’re visiting too. Xx All the best on the remainder of your tour!

    Really great ideas. Thanks x

  6. Hayley says:

Hey Beautiful Mel, These tips are AWESOME.

I especially love the kindness factor… gets you everywhere, and, fasting. It quickly scrambles up the beliefs that we must must MUST eat, and when I started doing it, I felt more powerful, not less for not eating.

Thanks for (once again) putting these into a succinct, beautiful, clear directory.

  7. Cassie Tran says:

I think that being spontaneous every now and then is awesome too! You might find some super memorable and expected surprises!
