Trying to get your content seen on Instagram can feel like an uphill battle sometimes.
And while there *is* a bit of magic behind going viral, it’s not all luck — there’s actually a great deal of strategy too.
Today, I’m pulling back the curtain on the insider secrets that can help your posts explode on Instagram.
The best part? These strategies are easy to implement, and they DON’T require a big following to work.
Let’s dive in.
Posts that explode on Instagram have 3 specific qualities:
1️⃣ They make people feel something — whether it’s awe, inspiration, laughter, or even a little bit of controversy.
2️⃣ High-quality image or video. Don’t worry, that doesn’t mean you need to go out and do a professional photo shoot (although that can be a great option!). It simply means having clear, bright, attention-grabbing visuals that can stand out in a crowded feed.
3️⃣ Powerful hook. Social media is fast-paced — people are always itching to scroll on to the next post. That means you’ve only got a split second to capture someone’s attention. So your first line, whether in a caption or a video, needs to hook them instantly.
If your post features these 3 things, you’ve got a shot at going viral. That’s when you can start pulling on some other levers…
Leverage Instagram’s Algorithm
Yes, Instagram’s algorithm can seem more mysterious than the Loch Ness Monster.
But there are strategies you can use to tilt it in your favor:
Timing Is Everything.
Posting when your audience is most active drastically increases the likelihood that your content will get seen, liked, and shared.
Hot tip: Take some time to figure out when your audience is online. You can use Instagram Insights to find out your followers’ peak activity times and days. And don’t be afraid to experiment! Try posting at different times to see what gets the best response.
Tap Into What’s Trending.
Instagram loves trends, so spend some time each week sifting through the Explore page. Look for recurring themes, popular hashtags, or challenges that are gaining momentum. If something aligns with your brand, jump on it quickly.
Put Your Own Spin On Things.
Going viral doesn’t mean copying what everyone else is doing. The most successful trend-based posts add a unique twist. Maybe it’s humor, a surprising perspective, or a connection to a personal story. The key is to stay authentic while participating in the trend.
Hot tip: If there’s a dance challenge taking off, think about how you can tie it into your niche. Are you a fitness coach? Show how the dance can double as a workout. A mama blogger? Do the dance in the kitchen while preparing your kid’s snack.
Always Use Trending Music (Unless You’re Using Original Audio)
Trending music is still important for virality. Where possible, I like to use trending audio that’s been used in less than 10k reels.
Engagement Is King
Here’s the truth: Instagram doesn’t care that much about how many followers you have. What really matters is how engaged your audience is.
This means that a smaller account with high engagement can go viral just as easily as a large account, as long as you:
➡️ Respond to Comments — The more active the comments section, the more likely your post will be shown to new people.
➡️ Encourage People To Save and Share — Likes are great, but saves and shares are where the magic happens. These actions tell Instagram that your content is valuable, which can lead to it being pushed out to more users.
Hot tip: To encourage saves, create content that’s worth revisiting — think tips, tutorials, or checklists. To encourage shares, create content that’s relatable or inspirational. Above all, don’t be afraid to ask! Sometimes, a simple “Save this post for later!” or “Share this with a friend who needs to see this!” can make all the difference.
Consistency is Queen
Viral posts can bring a flood of new followers, but if you’re not regularly posting quality content, they won’t stick around.
If consistency is something you struggle with, try:
- Batching your content — set aside a day to create and schedule your posts for the week. This way, you can stay consistent without feeling overwhelmed.
- Get creative with repurposing — look back at all your old content (newsletters, videos, podcasts, blog posts etc) and look for things you can turn into a post.
- Lower your posting frequency until you find your sweet spot — it’s better to post 3 great reels each week than 7 mediocre ones!
Finally…
Pay Attention To What Works And What Doesn’t.
Instagram’s insights can tell you which posts are performing best, what time your audience is most active, what type of content they engage with the most and more.
So check your analytics regularly and use this data to refine your strategy over time.
The Bottom Line
Going viral on Instagram isn’t just about luck or having millions of followers — it’s also about being strategic with your content, posting consistently, and doing what you can to tip the algorithm in your favor.
So take action, follow these steps, and tag me in your post when you become a viral sensation!
