Want to hit 6-figures or more in 2024? This FREE training for coaches, consultants and service providers shows you how to work less hours, earn more (with fewer clients), and declutter your path to success. Watch Now >>

This weekend, I’m taking off on a six-week creative bender to write my book. I am so excited and can’t wait for full-blown creative immersion. I’ll be bunkering down, cozying up in my zone of genius, and getting it done.

I am going to miss you, beauty. Really, I am. I hate parting with my beautiful tribe, but I need to create space for the magic to flow so I can be of even higher service to you. Six weeks is the longest I have gone without you… gulp! Wish me luck.

You’ll hear from me from time to time, so don’t worry about that. In the meantime, enjoy exploring our new site. And take some time for you for total creative immersion. Maybe you could start that project, launch that product or knit that jumper? What ever it is, do it!

And darling, anything is possible.

Back in 2010, if you’d told me I would be writing a real-life book for two of the best publishing houses in the world, I wouldn’t have believed you. In fact, years ago, if you had told me I would be an entrepreneur, successfully running my own business and doing what I love, I would have spat out my vodka, lime and soda.

The life I live now is beyond my wildest dreams.

But it wasn’t always smooth sailing. I had full on punch-ups with my Mean Girl many times, especially in the early days of building my biz. I’d let her take over, but I am so glad I kept on persisting. I have always been super determined and very passionate with everything I do, which is why I am where I am today.

And Holy Smokes am I grateful. Doing what you love everyday is the best feeling in the world. I love being an entrepreneur for these reasons:

You Get To Be Your Own Boss

You’re in charge of setting the direction, steering the ship, and making the decisions. At first, the fact that the buck stopped with me scared the shit out of me. Now, I see it as the ultimate in self-responsibility. If I’m not happy in my work, and I’m not excited to jump out of bed each day, there’s no else to blame. I truly am 100% responsible for my own happiness.

You Get To Set Your Own Hours

If I’m feeling on fire and want to immerse myself for ten days straight, I go for it. If I’m feeling called to pull back, retreat, and spend time on self-care, I absolutely do that too. Being able to follow your own rhythms and work with your energy, not against it, is one of the best parts of owning your own business (Not to mention, sleep-ins whenever you need them = bliss!).

Stop waiting for a rainy day. Stop waiting for the perfect time. The moment to act is now.

You Get To Work On Products And Projects That Inspire The Heck Out Of You

Life’s too short to pour your heart and soul into things that don’t light you up. When you’re fuelled by passion and purpose, and doing things that interest you, you feel like you’re living in alignment with your truth. And as an added bonus, it doesn’t even feel like work.

You Get To Make The Rules

I love making the rules in my business. And I’m strict about then! Things like not answering emails after 6pm and not scheduling back-to-back meetings and interviews. I’ve created boundaries that support me, and I lovingly enforce them.

You Get To Carve Out How Your Life Looks

If you want your days filled with beautiful coaching clients, you can do that. If you’d rather spend your time pounding away at your laptop writing words of wisdom, you can do that too. When you’re the boss, you get to choose.

You Get To Decide What’s Important To You

If you’re working for someone else, you have to align with their ideals. Which might mean chasing profit at the expense of everything else. Or valuing quantity over quality. Or prioritising work over your family and loved ones. When you run your own biz, YOU get to decide. Every decision I make is funnelled through a filter of how it feels in my heart, how it’s helping me fulfil my purpose, and how it’s serving you guys – my beautiful tribe. All other considerations are secondary.

And… You Get To Take A Six-Week Creative Bender If You So Wish

I’m so thrilled I get to devote myself fully to this project. Carving out the time and space to bring a long-held dream to life feels freaking amazing. I can’t wait to fill you in on this awesome movement and all the goodness I’ve been working on.

So I’ll see you soon, gorgeous! But before I bunker down, I’d love to hear from you. Share with us in the comments below – Do you run your own business? Or have you been itching to start one? What does your heart feel pulled to do?

I love reading all your beautiful stories in the comments. Thank you so much for sharing your insights – remember yours might just be the spark that changes someone’s life!

    All the best lady! X

    • Melissa Ambrosini says:

      Thank you beautiful.

Remember it’s the little things you do each day that add up to big result or big consequences.

Keep putting one foot in front of the other. That’s all we can do.

  4. Tara Midwood says:

    Hello gorgeous souls

    • Melissa Ambrosini says:

I am so pumped for you and your biz Soulful Spirit, it sounds freaking awesome babe.

Good luck with it all and I can’t wait to watch you and your biz grow.

      xx

  5. Amy says:

Wow! 6 weeks is a very long time, but I am so glad you have made the right choice for you! As I was reading through all you’re great advice about owning a business, it made me a little sad that unfortunately not all us can own our own business. I’m studying to be a teacher, so I will always be following someone else ‘s rules. For some that may seem a bit scary, but when you have such a passion for something, you don’t mind. Anyway, best of luck with your writing! 🙂 Xx

    • Melissa Ambrosini says:

      Hi Amy,

If you love what you do some much and don’t mind why did it make you sad? One would think you would be jumping out of your skin to do it no?

We all have the power to choose our path and you are choosing to be a teacher because you love it. That is beautiful darling.

Keep doing what you love always and follow your heart.

      xx

      • Astrid says:

Congratulations Melissa on writing your book! I know it will be amazing as you inspire me so much! Best Wishes on your writing retreat! Just wanted to share with Amy that I am a teacher too & it is such a privilege & so rewarding to teach young students! I have a dream to teach students all about healthy eating, cooking, gardening & self confidence (not just the National Curriculum) so thank you for the encouragement 🙂 I love teaching young children! Sending you hugs Melissa & good luck with your teaching Amy!

    • Alice says:

      Hi there Amy,
I read an amazing paragraph (they all pretty much are) in The Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte on career and being ‘lit up’ by it or not. It is true that whatever work you do comes down to choice and so it’s important to ask yourself how you want to feel in your job. Not everybody is the same and some people love having the rules laid out by others… However if this isn’t you, how can you create that for yourself? Can you do your training and open a private tutor business, travel and work at other schools in less developed countries which may give you freedom from local government beaurocracy or can you transfer the passion you have for teaching into a career that does help you feel the way you want? Someone sloes to me is a teacher and is going into copywriting to give her flexibility and freedom. The truth is rarely what you believe it to be and there is always (always) choice. Do you really want to be a teacher? What did your intuition tell you then? If you don’t then it is about releasing the fear of changing course to get to where you want to be!!! Shine Bright!

  6. Jess says:

Hi Melissa, great to hear about your up coming book! I’m a recent bschooler through Jess Ainscough and have recently left my job to start on my own business.. Bit ballsey of me but I felt relieved.
I’m actually waiting for my flight to leave for Bali. I’m getting my organic fabric cushions that I hand dye, sewn by a lovely Indonesian lady. Fingers crossed I make good connections I’m new at all of this and am learning along the way.
My love for interior design and textile design has really waken me this year I feel guided and sounds weird but I can already visualise the future and it looks exciting. So anyway thank you for your story it’s great to hear we are all on the same journey. Have fun on your break!
    Jess

    • Melissa Ambrosini says:

      Hi Jess,

It doesn’t sound weird at all.

Well done for following your intuition how exciting and yes very ballsey.

      Enjoy Bali darling.

      x

  7. Thanks for this inspiration Melissa. I run my own business with my partner and I’m still in the battlefield with my mean girl. I have been working hard at this for about 6 months so far and I’ve just realised that I can win the battle but it takes heaps of work. I’m loving being my own boss. Bill paying and reputation building is a focus ATM, of course, and my goal is to be able to take on the work and clients I want to, and I’d love to be in a position to spend 6 weeks writing! Sounds like bliss, enjoy!!

    • Melissa Ambrosini says:

      Hi Michelle,

Keep doing what you love honey and doing it with all your heart and it will flow a lot nicer.

      xx

  8. Holly says:

    Hi Melissa,

Firstly, thank you kindly for your contribution! I love what you’re doing 🙂 x Speaking of Vodka, Lime & Soda…. have you made the decision to give up alcohol completely? I’ve heard that drinking alcohol lowers our vibration and I would agree with that statement when it comes to binge drinking. However, I love a glass of red or two and just can’t commit to giving it up completely. Could you candidly share your thoughts on this subject with me?

    Yours gratefully,
    Holly xox

    • Melissa Ambrosini says:

      Hey Holly,

      Thanks for your comment.

Yes I gave up alcohol 4.5 years ago and haven’t looked back. I have never felt better in my entire life. The energy I have is incredible. Yes, it does lower your vibration but you have to do what’s right for you darling. It does not serve me so why would I do it. But you need to make the right decision for you 😉

I am not saying I will never drink again…who’s know what will happen in the future but right now it does not serve me at all.

      xx

  9. Meg says:

Starting up my coaching biz at the moment. Manifesting a whole heap of curious women with big, bold, beautiful dreams into my life. And all those points just cement in my mind that this is the exact path I want to me own. Having the freedom to prioritise self-love and self-care every day whilst helping women do the same thing! Yep, that’s my dream!

  10. Kaleen christie says:

So freakin proud of you Mel!! A book, a book!!! That is truley amazing, so happy for you! Xoxox

  11. Sarah says:

Congrats Melissa! Thats so awesome:) I run my own business and do it for all of the reasons you listed above..Bliss! I have to admit, its really hard and sometimes I think it might be easier to go back to my old standard job. It helps hearing that it wasn’t always perfect for you, I can relate to that.

Thanks for the inspiration and wise words! Looking forward to your book!!!

  12. Charmaine says:

Hey Mel, I have had a hair salon for 14 years & have been working on gratitude. A lot of the things you mentioned above are on my list too:) I also struggle… with staff issues ( I have just had to replace two amazing hairdressers as they have had a baby) fear of not making enough, fear that a new staff member may not be kind hearted & cause me to be away/ not present with my little boys, cause financial difficultly, have a negative effect on my long term illness. How can I come from a place of love in relation to this? Xx

    • Melissa Ambrosini says:

      Hey Charmaine,

Instead of focusing on ‘what if’s’ try focusing on exactly what you would like your new staff to be like:

      For example:

+ I would love them to be easy going and free.
+ I would love them to be hardworking and kind hearted.
+ I would love them to be self sufficient so that I can spend more time with my little boys.

Keep focusing on what you would like instead of what you wouldn’t like.

      I hope this helps honey.

      xx

  13. Kim says:

    Hi Melissa,
I started the IIN course and had to defer recently as I have just separated from my husband. I have three young girls that I’m raising on my own most if the time now. We will be moving house soon and I just decided that instead of making excuses like I don’t have enough time, to get back into it with a passion and fulfil what my heart is screaming for. I have come to the realisation that there will always be shit going on in our lives, just different stuff… But if we follow our hearts we can cope with all the other stuff so much better! And what a better example for my 3 beautiful and already health focused daughters than to be a strong and inspirational woman doing what she loves everyday! I hope your writing journey flows and flows for you. Lots of love Kim xxx

    • Melissa Ambrosini says:

Thank you so much beautiful Kim.

You’re so right we have to stop making excuses and just do it.

Three gorgeous health focused girls…how beautiful.

I hope to meet you all one day 😉

      xx

  14. Stephanie says:

    Dear Mel,
How exciting! I cannot wait to see what amazingly encouraging and affirming information you create in six weeks! Not hearing from you during that time will be tough. So very grateful I found your blog last year. Best wishes from your biggest fan in America.
    Stephanie

  15. I’m resigning from my corporate job today to start chasing my dreams. This is exactly what I needed to read and remind myself that being my own boss is going to be the best gift to myself ever. Good luck Melissa and enjoy the bender xx

  16. Genevieve says:

Love all of these points – they are exactly why I am starting my own business! And the more I work on my business in my spare time..the happier I seem to get – funny that!! xx

  17. Dyani says:

I loved this post Mel. As a creative stuck working a 9-5 routine that is completely misaligned with what my heart wants, it’s always nice to be reminded of the beautiful rewards that come from being brave and following your truth.

I love what you said about not waiting for the perfect moment and acting NOW. I recently saw the truth in those words when, just this week, after 9 years in the same job, I plucked up the courage to ask my boss if I could cut my hours to part-time. My heart (and the universe) has been telling me for a long time that it’s time to go solo, but I needed to carve out some space in my busy life to make this happen. He amazingly said YES, and after 2 YEARS of waiting because I had been too afraid to ask, I am now one small, but very important step closer to my dream. Imagine if I had done it 2 years ago? I would probably already be living my dream life by now 🙂

I’m very inspired by your decision to allow yourself full creative immersion into your latest project and I can’t wait to see what beautiful truths you’ll have to share with us at the end of it. Congratulations – have a ball and enjoy the ride!

Thanks for sharing your journey and wisdom with us xox

  18. What a fantastic opportunity! Enjoy every moment Melissa, you earned it.

  19. Stephanie says:

I’m really wanting to make stuff happen in my world… My website is new, my focus is new, my dream to write is old, but fear has held me back for years … It’s my time and I’m heading in the right direction. Your story is inspiring, your passion catching … Can’t wait to read your book. Enjoy the creativity.

  20. Hi Melissa,

I started my own company last September and although I’m not technically able to go on my own ‘bender’ yet, there’s the dream of a bender in the future! 🙂 Thanks for the amazing reminder of how blessed I am to be an entrepreneur.

Best wishes with your book (I have written one and let me tell you, it’s a big job but SO worth it!).

    Emily (www.iheartmylife.com)

  21. Mel says:

    Hi Mel from another Mel!

Wishing you all the love and luck as you embark on your writing journey. I know we will eventually cross paths as I am studying with Beautiful You Coaching Academy in Sydney, so I look forward to connecting with you in the real world then. Should be an amazing journey!

If you have a chance to answer this for me, I was keen to find out if you also think I should study the Integrative Nutrition Course. At this stage I see my business taking more of a mental health and wellbeing focus rather than a nutritional focus. ( but understand nutrition will play a part – holistically speaking ) With this in mind I was thinking may be some short courses on nutrition might be enough, but I am very keen to hear your thoughts.

    Thanks gorgeous Mel

    Mel xx

    • Melissa Ambrosini says:

      Hey Mel,

I would highly suggest IIN. I loved it! It was the best thing I did. But only you know what is right for you.

      xx

  22. Linda says:

When I read this, I feel envious and recognise that I have been waiting for the perfect moment ………….. it is time for me to wake up now and take action!

  23. So needed to read this today!! I quit my corporate job a few weeks ago and have one easy week left before I retire from it for good. I started my own ‘Mumafit’ business slowly last year whilst on maternity leave and now I’m ready to dive head first into it and grow it for all of the wonderful reasons you’ve listed above. Its not easy (with three tiny kids at home also) but I feel so positive about it paying off for me and my little family and everyone it serves – with a wonderfully supportive following already, I’m so excited to see where I am one year from now. Keep on inspiring xx

    • Melissa Ambrosini says:

      How exciting Fiona.

I am super pumped for you darling. You are going to do great things and help so many people.

      Keep following your truth.

      xx

  24. Tara Caetano says:

Thank you for this post Melissa! I am in the very early, beginner phase of having my own business and it is so incredibly excited! I have noticed though that because I don’t have anyone to essentially report to, I often find myself not always being as productive as I would be if I was doing it for someone else. I love what I do, and have big plans for where I want to go, but I am beginning to realise that I need to up the self-motivation and show up for myself more so I don’t start to slack off or take too long to meet deadlines that I would have met easily in my previous jobs. I would love to know of any tips you have for keeping yourself on track as an entrepreneur?

All the best with your book lovely, cant wait to read it! xx

    • Melissa Ambrosini says:

      Hi Tara,

I give myself and my team deadlines. And before I had a team I still gave myself deadlines, they you work back from there. That way you make sure it happens.

      xx

  25. Jessie says:

    Hi Mel,
Best of luck on your journey to complete your book. I am so excited for you and cannot wait to read it. Thank you for being such an inspiration to us all 🙂 xx

  26. Charlotte says:

OMG I am so happy for you and can’t wait until the day I will read your book. It’s another amazing present you gonna give to us.

Actually i am not an entrepreneur but I dream to be. I think I am just lost and afraid about it.
I will try figure it out during this 6 week.

But Melissa, thank you to be every day by our side.

    Much Love
    Charlotte

  27. Megan Coburn says:

You are such an inspiration Mel, I leave your website up on my computer all day at work and when I need a little boost I look at it and then get back to my work.

Good luck with the book I look forward to reading it, I have loved watching your journey over the past 12 months you inspire me so much.

    Thank you and good luck
    Love and light
    Megan

  28. Very inspiring! Best of luck to you on this exciting and wonderful 6 week journey. Can’t wait to see what you create!

  29. Sisley says:

    Melissa,

You are so inspiring and you deserve this time more than anyone. I have been listening to your guided meditations lately and I feel amazing. I would love to be an entrepreneur one day just like you. I am still young (20) but have so many ideas running through my mind, I’m just not quite sure where to even start! I love food and health and they are my passion. You inspire me each and everyday to be the best I can possibly be.

    Lots of love from Canada,

    Xx

  30. renee bell says:

woooo hoo – love this so much, and one of the reasons I love having my own business 🙂 cant wait to check out your book when it is released!

  31. I just discovered you Melissa doing a self care search on google and your words resonate and ring true for me. Delighted to read your posts and connect with a Kindred Spirit via twitter too @BYOSHero

  32. Uma says:

Hi Melissa! Your work lights my soul up every day, no matter how dark it gets sometimes. I’ve been putting off betting on myself and starting an online craft business, something which I so deeply desire to do but fear massively due to “failure.” I know that now is the time. Seeing this article feels like yet another sign from the universe to bet on myself. Thank you for all you do!
